Temperament Tests
Temperament tests are an excellent method for breeders, and owners, alike to have the temperament of their Alaskan Malamutes assessed. In Canada, the dog receives a TT and a nice certificate if they pass all of the various tests. The tests include: sound sensitivity (gun shots); unusual footing, such as snow fencing laid flat; crowds; etc. The cost of the test is usually around $30 and can give you a wealth of information about your pet or your breeding stock. Each breed is expected to have certain, acceptable, behaviors. For example, one would not expect an Alaskan Malamute to behave like a Rottweiler (or the reverse) on confrontation of a ‘strange' person. Generally speaking, an Alaskan Malamute would need to show confidence and curiosity. |
Therapy Dog International program
The Therapy Dog International program occasionally is available in Canada and adds to the requirements of a CGN. The dog is presented with medical equipment (wheelchairs, crutches); unattended food in a dish; noise, other dogs, etc.
Canine Good Neighbour program

The tests include accepting stranger, on-leash manners; acceptance to grooming; walking politely, sit, down, stay, come; reactions to other canines; distractions; isolation; among others.
